Summer is almost here — and, I’m taking my #SkinBabe focus up a notch with laser hair removal! I’ve been interested in laser hair removal for a long time but never sat down to learn about the process, how much it costs or what impact it could make on my skin and body until recently. With curly, coarse hair, I’ve also dealt with ingrown hairs — and, if you have too, you know they are a pain in the A$$. Since delivering children (#SoManyBabies 😍) I’ve dealt with even more ingrown hairs and my hair is even more coarse.
When I talked about this concern with Dr. Gregory Chernoff, he told me that ingrown hair is actually a top reason people turn to laser hair removal. I never realized that! Dr. Chernoff explained to me that laser hair removal is often a “life-changing treatment for both women and men” suffering from ingrown hair and those with excessive hair — I immediately said, LET’S START MY TREATMENTS!
So, what is laser hair removal? Dr. Chernoff explains it all in this video. Dr. Chernoff tells us that laser hair removal should actually be called laser hair modification because hair follicles are alive and cannot be fully removed. The light energy from the laser causes progressive damage to the hair follicles. This can cause hair follicles to get smaller near the surface of the skin. Typically, with each laser treatment, less hair grows back, and it grows back thinner and finer. The FDA has approved laser hair removal for all skin types. Dr. Chernoff and his team of certified estheticians can target any area of unwanted hair. The most popular areas are underarm hair, bikini area, chin hair, leg hair and back hair for men (please note Dr. Chernoff’s Sasquatch reference in the video, HA!)
Dr. Chernoff suggests each person needs at least 6 treatments to really change the growth pattern of the hair follicles. I will do 6 treatments, once a month for my underarm and bikini area. Dr. Chernoff says patients tend to start seeing results after three treatments. After each treatment, there is usually a slight amount of redness in the treatment area. I’ve never had redness the next day. If you have sensitive skin, you can apply more aloe. It is extremely rare for the laser to burn you during a treatment. You can read more about side effects here.

One thing I mention in the video that I didn’t know ahead of the laser hair removal treatment process is you must shave the area you will be treating right before your appointment. You do not want to burn your hair. Is laser hair removal painful? Yes. How painful? I’d say it stings more than Botox. Sam, my esthetician, told me it would hurt like a “rubber band flick” — BINGO! Each time the laser moves along your skin you feel that flick, then it is over. Dr. Chernoff says men complain a lot more about the pain than women — go figure! 😊The procedure is SO quick and once it’s over, so is the pain. As they say, beauty is pain so deal with it for less than five minutes, #SkinBabes! Laser Hair Removal is charged by the area of hair. Dr. Chernoff tells me the average cost for a single area, like your underarms, is around $500.
